"Rock'n Me" (as well known equally "Rock 'Due north Me" or "Rock 'N' Me") is a vocal by American rock band Steve Miller Ring, released in 1976 from the band'south ninth studio album Fly Similar an Eagle (1976).[iv] Information technology was written by primary ring leader and songwriter Steve Miller released as the second single from the anthology. Miller also produced the song and anthology.[v] [three] The Northward American release of the single was generally credited to Steve Miller as a person, while the European release was by and large credited to the Steve Miller Ring as a whole group.
The song achieved lasting commercial and critical success, with the publication Billboard labeling it "an immediate audience grabber".[5] It became the ring's 2d #1 hit on the U.s.a. Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed at the superlative for one week,[half dozen] [7] it as well topped the Canadian RPM Acme Singles nautical chart.[8] In subsequently years, the song has been included in several compilation albums such as 1978's Greatest Hits 1974–78 and 1991's The Very All-time of the Steve Miller Band.[3]
Miller has acknowledged that elements of "Rock'north Me", particularly the intro, was a tip of the hat to English rock band Free specially the bands only striking song "All Right Now". He stated:[v]
Yeah, it's a tack on the wall for Paul (Kossoff). I did one concert in the ii years that I was off the road. I went to London and played with Pink Floyd... it was a big, huge outdoor show so we needed a big stone and roll number that was really going to excite everybody. I just put information technology together and didn't think much virtually it.
He returned to the subject area in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock Nights, referring to his back up slot at Pink Floyd's one-off appearance at Knebworth on June 1975:[9]
I had thought about the gig and I knew they manner it was going to work was, I was going to play only earlier Pink Floyd... the sun would be going downward, it would be really common cold, at that place wouldn't exist any lights on the stage, it would exist a lousy fourth dimension ... I went, 'You know, I'm gonna kick those guys in the butt.' So what I did was, I wrote 'Rock'n Me' as a song to play at a festival, to simply get it going.
Equanimous for that kind of pop and rock festival atmosphere,[5] the lyrics and vocals have been labeled equally having an 'every homo' quality to them.[3] It is sung from the point of view of someone oftentimes traveling while keeping a positive, upbeat attitude. Locations mentioned in the song include the major cities of Phoenix, Arizona; Tacoma, Washington; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; and Los Angeles, California.
Billboard Magazine described "Rock'due north Me" every bit a "catchy and highly humorous midtempo rocker," saying that the tune sounds like the Beach Boys and the Eagles in places.[10] Cash Box said that information technology's "draws from the best of rock 'due north' scroll over the last 10 years" and has "claw-filled guitar lines."[eleven]
The song is a playable track on the video game Stone Band 2, and featured in Grand Theft Auto V and Tap Tap Revenge 3 for iOS.
